Living Funeral Ceremonies Explained
A mindful way to confront your own mortality.
Living Funeral Ceremonies Explained
The Living Funeral Ceremony (Experience) is a two- to three-hour guided meditation and memorial created to give participants a meaningful and transformative experience encouraging a celebration of life rather than a fear of death. This intensely personal and potentially challenging session offers a mindful way to confront your own mortality while gaining acceptance and understanding of your life as a whole.
A Living Funeral Experience, sometimes referred to as a mock funeral, includes a writing exercise and guided meditation designed to give participants a fresh outlook on life after confronting their own mortality.
In recent years, it's become a trend to conduct a mock funeral service as a way to better understand and appreciate life. The original Living Funeral sessions were held in Seoul, South Korea and designed to trigger a fresh start for the people attending. Thousands of South Koreans have chosen this approach as part of a national employer-provided motivational program. In Thailand, mock funerals are seen as a kind of rebirth and have been incorporated into addiction treatment programs that encourage attendees to let go of the past and begin anew.
Here in the US, this ceremony is limited to 12-15 participants. It is first come, first served and open to the public. You're welcome to invite anyone to sign up and attend class with you. Private Living Funeral Ceremonies are also available for one to four people.
When you attend a Living Funeral, please dress comfortably and bring a water bottle. You’ll be sitting on a ground blanket with padding underneath. If you would be more comfortable in a chair, just let us know when you arrive.
